The new heat network with forest biomass for the buildings on the campus of the University of Valladolid in Palencia will serve the buildings on the "La Yutera" campus: ETS Engineering Agrarias, Vice-rectorate, Classrooms, Departments and the faculties of Education and Sciences of the Worked. The campus currently meets its thermal needs through individual diesel and natural gas boilers, some of which are at the end of their useful life.
The tender budget for the heat network was €1.132.028,16 and the renovation work on the thermal installation and the boiler had a budget of €185.877,93. The fossil energy replaced will be 2.677.540 kWh/year generating economic savings of more than 35% compared to current fossil costs. An annual consumption of 835 tons of G-100 forest chips is expected.
The generation plant has a fuel storage area and another heat production area. And the mobile grate technology boiler, with a thermal power of 1.650 KW, is equipped with a multicyclone and an electrofilter to minimize emissions into the atmosphere. It also has a 40.000 liter buffer tank and a 1,2 km long network. The facility has a central control post that communicates, via a new fiber optic line, with the heat exchange substations that will be located in each of the buildings connected to the network.
UVA thus manages to have a centralized renewable thermal energy supply system for the entire campus. Biomass replaces the use of imported and polluting fossil fuels with a renewable, sustainable and local source of energy that helps generate employment in rural environments, reduces energy dependence in the region and contributes to the prevention of forest fires in Castilla y León.
