Biofuel sales increase

Pellet sales are steadily increasing throughout Europe. If they already did before the pandemic and the energy crisis caused by Russia, now the demand is growing much faster. For example, Spain and Austria require 100.000 tons more each year, Germany 500.000 and France 300.000.

New plants are being built and existing ones are being upgraded to increase production capacity. When making pellets, improving the energy efficiency and robustness Technological are two factors that equipment suppliers offer in order to maintain ENplus standards.

Offer the fuel more economical and abundant is not at odds with quality, as shown by BIOMASUD suppliers of chips, shells, olive stones,...

The wood, economic and sustainable, also requires a process of handling, cleaning, cutting and drying to reach the consumer and avoid the classic emission problems in traditional open homes.

CIMEP will discuss the raw material, the situation of the national and international market and the evolution of the pellet-consuming facilities, topics that will be addressed by experts of international reference.
Drying a ton of water thermally has an energy balance that easily reaches 900 kWh. With the new Saalasti 1803 Press “HIPPO” the same amount is extracted with about 25 kWh, the difference is of the order of 35 times more efficient.

Pellet factories The map of Spain, updated every year by AVEBIOM, collects 82 pellet factories, one less than last year. However, the manufacturing capacity increases again and is at least 2.152.800 tons per year. This has been in part thanks to the capacity expansions of 16 plants (by four factories that have reduced their capacity and 6 plants that have not provided their data). On the other hand, 4 plants have ceased their activity and new factories start to operate 3.
It is a technologically advanced and highly automated plant in all processes of wood treatment, for its chipping, grinding, drying and granulation. Arapellet will have a production capacity of 140 thousand tons per year, which will be destined mainly for export. When the total volume of investment in the Errago municipality of Zaragoza is completed, which will exceed 17 million euros, people will work in the 30 plant, and additional 100 jobs will be created dedicated to biomass supply activities.
85% of the pellets manufactured in Spain are certified with the ENplus® quality seal, according to the Spanish Association for the Energy Valorization of Biomass, Avebiom, which has managed this certification since its introduction in 2011. From 2011 to 2018 they have been issued in Spain a total of 52 ENplus® certificates with production scope and 26 with marketing scope, which places Spain among the countries with the most certified companies in Europe, along with Germany, Austria and Italy.
Bioenergy startup Futerra Torrefaçao e Tecnologia SA revealed that it has begun construction of its first commercial scale torrefied pellet production plant in Valongo, Portugal. The plant will have an annual production capacity of 120.000 tons of torrefied pellets and 55.000 tons of industrial wood pellets. According to Henk Hutting, president and co-founder of Futerra Fuels, roasting will play a critical role in the future of biomass for power generation.
ENERBIOLOG is an innovative initiative driven by a group of Galician companies to obtain solid biofuels of quality and easy use at minimum economic and energy cost through innovative logistic formats and the application of monitoring and control techniques in real time. The Technological Institute of Galicia, Greenalia, Forestry Biomass and Indutec Engineers are the entities involved.
Serra is one of the towns of the Valencian Community, with a clear vocation to be energy self-sufficient. A few years ago they started a local project to use bioenergy. They convert garden, agricultural and forestry waste (mainly from fire prevention work) into biofuel suitable for local uses.
Naturpellet, the EN Plus certified pellet producer, has been increasing its annual production by 50% since June, from 40.000 to 60.000 tons. The boom in the use of biomass, the proximity to the raw material and avoiding rural depopulation have been the reasons to address this expansion. The company defines the pellet as < >. More info:
