Iberian Bioenergy has carried out the necessary work to increase the steam production capacity of the biomass boiler in the chocolate factory that Nestlé has in La Penilla de Cayón (Cantabria) by up to 40%.
The generation of thermal energy with the biomass boiler allows Nestlé to reduce annual net emissions of CO2 equivalent by 2.850 tons.
The factory's biomass boiler uses the cocoa husk obtained in the cocoa roasting process as biofuel to produce steam, which in turn becomes a source of energy for the roasting process of this raw material.
The wood that the boiler will consume from now on meets the sustainability requirements imposed by current regulations, specifically the European Renewable Energy Directive, RED II-III. What is fully guaranteed thanks to the European certification system SURE.
José Luis Romero, Director of Operations at Bioenergy Ibérica, highlights the company's commitment to seeking energy solutions that provide local energy: "Transforming the industry with projects like these allows us to achieve less dependence on fossil fuels, as well as “achieve an economy and society free of net CO2 emissions”
This initiative adds to Nestlé's efforts to decarbonize its production processes, evidencing its commitment to the circular economy.

ECOFRICALIA will be in charge of installing the first pellet plant in Cuba. The installation is part of the development aid project “Energy valorization of residual woody biomass in agri-food and bionatural products industries.”
The project is developed for 18 months, starting in November 2022, at the Research Center for Protein Plants and Bionatural Products and consists of transforming the residual woody biomass from prunings of moringa, a very abundant plant in this country, to produce pellets that It will be used as fuel in dryers for agri-food products such as moringa leaves or tobacco and in the milk pasteurization process.
The objective is to modernize these sectors and gain energy self-sufficiency, eliminating current consumption of diesel and electricity.
In parallel, activities are planned to ensure the proper functioning of the facilities, such as the construction of an experimental pelletizing and combustion plant in Cubaenergia that will serve as a test bed and contribute to the training of specialized personnel and to analyze the replicability of the project.
Moringa is a tree native to India that is grown in warm areas and from which practically all of its parts can be used: bark, pods, seeds, roots and flowers.
The project has a duration of 18 months and a budget of €507.400. Led by the University of Zaragoza through CIRCE (Associate of AVEBIOM), has other Spanish partners such as SODePAZ and Curved Quintin S.L (associate of AVEBIOM), and a Cuban partner, Cubasolar.

The award aims to highlight the constant work towards sustainability and maintenance of forest masses, which consolidates Ence - Energía y Celulosa SA, as a leader in the research and development of best practices for their improvement.
The leadership of Ence in energy production from biomass in Spain is unquestionable; With the AVEBIOM award we want to recognize the pioneering nature of the company in the certification of the environmental sustainability of the biomass it uses through the European SURE system. Its responsible and sustainable management of agroforestry resources is, without a doubt, an example to follow.
1,6 million tons of biomass used to generate renewable energy in 2022
Ence It has more than 1.300 employees, whose work positions the company as a leader in Europe in the eucalyptus pulp sector and in the generation of renewable energy with biomass in Spain, where it achieved a production in 2022 of 2.321,1 GWh.
Ence manages more than 66.000 hectares of forest mass in Spain, of which 22% is dedicated exclusively to the protection and conservation of ecosystems. Its forest assets are 83% certified with some of the most advanced international standards in forest management and traceability and chain of custody, such as PEFC and FSC®. The biomass used for energy production has been certified under the European system SURE which guarantees the highest standards of environmental sustainability required by the EU.
In 2022, Ence produced renewable energy using more than 1,6 million tons of biomass, considerably reducing the amount of fuel from forest masses, which is probably the best forest fire prevention system in Spain.
Magnon Green Energy, the renewable energy subsidiary of Ence and associated with AVEBIOM, is the first Spanish company in the production of renewable energy with biomass. It has a total generation capacity of 266 MW in its eight power plants: three in Huelva, two in Ciudad Real, one in Córdoba, one in Jaén and one in Mérida. These are electricity generation plants that are powered exclusively by biomass of agroforestry origin from nearby environments, which contributes to the reduction of burning of the excess byproduct and the reactivation of the economy in rural areas.
On the other hand, in Ence's pulp biofactories, in Pontevedra and Navia, 112 MW are generated through its sustainable generation and cogeneration plants that ensure the energy self-sufficiency of these facilities.
It has currently launched new business initiatives linked to the forestry and bioenergy sector such as Ence Biogas and Ence Terra.

The Furanflex® system offers the possibility of Rehabilitate chimneys and flues of any shape, size and length without requiring extensive masonry work. Its installation process is extremely fast, allowing the internal reconstruction of the chimneys and their immediate use in a matter of hours.
Chimneys, both built and metallic, experience a continuous process of deterioration, which is attributable not so much to the materials used but rather to the high temperatures to which they are subjected.
Likewise, the chemical reactions derived from the products and processes of combustion, regardless of the type of fuel used, also contribute to this degradation process. Chimney repair involves a significant expense and, in many cases, is accompanied by masonry work and renovations that are annoying and expensive.
The Furanflex® method involves inserting a thermosetting lining made of a composite material into the old duct. Water vapor is then injected, causing the coating to conform to the walls of the duct. Once the duct expands, the catalyzing process begins and within a few hours, the coating is completely hardened and ready for use.
The system is integrated without splices and guarantees total airtightness. Adapts to the shape and trajectory of the original duct. With a thickness of between 3 and 5 mm, the diameter of the primary duct is minimally reduced, which does not affect the chimney draft. Its hardness is comparable to that of steel, being non-combustible, resistant to corrosion and with a heat resistance capacity of up to 1.000 degrees Celsius.
Dr. Humo, a company specializing in the installation, maintenance and repair of chimneys that run on biomass, presented this product at Expobiomasa 2023, along with tools and equipment for the professional chimney sweep.
